Southwestern Landscape Painting

"Pueblo Bonito"
Chaco Canyon, NM
24" x 30"
Oil on Panel
No. 54
In this Southwestern Landscape Painting, "Pueblo Bonito," an original oil on panel, I wanted to show Pueblo Bonito, abandoned for centuries to the starkness of a treeless desert wash, under a big sky. Sketched on location including sky, less the parking lot, which was not part of the Anasazi urban planning department's original zoning and development criteria, however the original inhabitants of this unbelievably harsh environment had roads running true North and South as well as canals for whatever it is that went on here in the middle of nowhere. It is speculated that as many as five thousand inhabitants were estimated to have lived in the pueblos in the Chaco wash proper.
